Birds > Anseriformes > Canada goose Branta canadensis

info

Though it might seem a bit exotic and unusual to us it will most likely blend in our landscape and become common. Canada Geese are very dynamic and effective evasive species. In Poland I saw them couple of times and in their behavior they start to resemble swans. They do not fear people. Sometimes, during winter feeding they approach on a very close distance. Let's add that there are few younglings in one breeding (like with swans) and they are not small birds, and their steady expansion in our country will become a fact. It is said that Goose's breeding in Poland took place couple of years ago. Goose's weight can reach up to 6 kilograms and its wingspan almost 2 meters. So, hardly any predator in Poland can compete, especially as it likes to stay close to human habitats.

I have added a few pictures of the Canada Goose in its natural environment. Photos were taken in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River next to Montreal. The geese were more timid there than those photographed in Poland. Several pictures that complemented the gallery were taken from a distance, in winter scenery, surrounded by ice floes.

As I wrote last year (description that opens the gallery), barnacles are the kind of invasive species in Poland. My visit to the new Malta ZOO in Poznań confirms these conclusions. A year ago, in winter, when the weather conditions were tough, there were several geese on large open water bodies of the ZOO. Now it is possible to find there a dozen or more (20-30) of them. They are less skittish than our gren-headed  mallards ( Anas platyrhynchos), they swim up to eat the first and are resistant to low temperatures. So it becomes true  the ornithologists’ forecast of their expansion. Will they supplant native species? We will see.

Taking Pictures of a Canadian Goose in the Scandinavian scenery (similar to Canadian) has led to changes in the gallery of this bird species. The Canadian Goose is an invasive species, but in the boreal forest scenery it fits the surroundings. So, some unplanned changes in the gallery have occurred here.

I've come across an opportunity to check if at the Baltic sea there is a possibility to photograph any interesting bird species. I managed to take some interesting pictures of Canada geese and record their voice. The latter however, was more problematic than the photos. The geese were not at  very  far distance, but they rarely produced sounds. I managed to isolate a few feeble sounds of the birds from an over twenty-minute recording, with quite a bothersome acoustic sea background. The gallery has been remodelled.
