Birds > Procellariiformes > Cory's Shearwater Calonectris borealis

info

In case of Cory’s shearwater I failed. My encounter with this bird was documented by only few photos. That is a pity, as in my opinion this is the most beautiful of those shearwaters photographed during my cruises, and the greatest. Its wingspan can reach up to 130 cm and it weighs less than one kilogram.
Last minute news – 05/2021 Madeira
I cannot imagine not to try, while my being in Madeira, to try to photograph seabirds for several hours. Madeira is one of the most interesting places for such observations. There are many representatives of the Procellariiformes, which are difficult to see elsewhere. This bird reconnaissance ended with photographing three species of birds: Cory's Shearwater, Manx shearwater and Bulwer’s petrel,. This was the order of the number of birds. We managed to find several groups of shearflies floating in the water. There were from a dozen to 50 birds in the group. Among them, twice the northern shearwater could be observed, much smaller than them. So important for mine, because the gallery so far contained poor documentary photos, and this is a bird that belongs to the fauna of Poland! Here there has been a radical improvement in the content of the gallery. The last bird I noticed during the short voyage was the Bulwer’s petrel. Two short meetings from quite a distance, which the Bulwer’s petrel did not allow to reduce. Nevertheless, I managed to take a few correct photos to set up a typhoon gallery on my website - it's a new species for me! Taking photos of procellariiformes is quite an extreme job. Everything can be a thing in a double move. Unstable boat on one side, mobile birds on the other. The longer I observe them, the more you admire their adaptation to such an environment. Sometimes they travel hundreds of kilometers a day in search of food. They use the wind to glide. It's amazing to be able to get close to them, observe them, let alone take pictures. No what, I will have to come back to Madeira, this time for the seabirds themselves ...
