Birds > Passerine > Common Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita

info

As it was said earlier in my  comments on the new gallery of a sedge warbler, in the same place I took either photos of a new species – a common chiffchaff. Those photos were taken on the common osier plantation. I suppose it is worth trying to photograph  in such places, especially where the space is closed and you hardly can meet people  or cars. While walking along the osier avenue I could notice that birds were surprised to see people there and at the beginning they did not fly away very far. All in all the place is very interesting, dense greenery reinforces the occurrence of large populations of small birds. I only need to camouflage myself to verify what species can be found there. This time it was the common chiffchaff, which pictures opened a new gallery of this species on my website. Even the first page of the gallery is not complete yet but the photos are of satisfactory quality and show details of chiffchaff’s plumage. So capturing a new species is a good reason for contentment, to be fully satisfied I need to record the sound but it will be possible in the spring when in mating season birds are more eager to give sounds and sing than in the autumn.

It did not take long for me to complement the gallery of the common chiffchaff. The tour of fields in the end of September resulted in taking pictures of a goldfinch and a common chiffchaff. When passing the fields, along the dirt road one could see that the road bushes growing on the rim were full of birds tenants. I stopped the car, opened the window and waited. Soon I could see that these tenants were great tits, goldfinches and common chiffchaffs . They let me  take photos of them  with no problems. On my right side I caught a glimpse of the large flock of starlings that were sitting on power lines. But there was something strange, one of the birds was different. I focused on starlings and saw a great grey shrike among them. It was a pity that it was so far. I admire this small predator, and it is also a species which gallery I would like to change radically. 200 meters away buzzards were sitting on poles . In the distance the voices of quails could be heard, but despite my efforts I could not see them . Well, not this time, it was not right moment for great grey shrikes and quails. So much was going on in this autumn surroundings, in the stubble field  apparently dry and waste. Only a little of patience  is what you really need to see more. But what about our chiffchaffs. My car standing near to the place did not bother chiffchaffs, which probably were accustomed to it living in roadside bushes. They probably used to be hosts there, because every now and then chased great tits that flew in there. In the Spring I will come back to them, especially for recording their voices . Goldfinches came around for a few minutes ...

The scenery where the images of the Lesser Whitethroat, the Red-necked Grebe and the Greylag Goose were taken also provided further opportunity for taking several photos of the Common Chiffchaff. More importantly, the sound of this species was recorded.

When I was searching for beavers in the reeds, two common chiffchaffs appearded suddenly. They seemed very intrigned with my presence. A few pictures with reeds in the background as a valuable addition to my gallery.

It was not difficult to encounter a chiffchaff in Finland and Norway, especially at the dawn one could hear their singing. I have uploaded a few photographs and replaced the recording of their sound with a better quality material.

Although the gallery of the chiffchaff did not belong to documentary ones, I have managed to take much more interesting photos and they have replaced the previous ones. I have also changed the soundtrack, as the chiffchaff, just like whitethroat during the long weekend, let me have a long photography session, combined with recording of their sounds, with which I didn’t have any difficulties.
