info

Well, the first pictures of the blue-eyed cormorant were taken while on a short cruise around the islands surrounding Ushuaia. Although with quite a distance, but I could photograph there blue-eyed cormorants and rock cormorants. At that time I did not know that I would have so few opportunities to observe the rock cormorants and to take photos. Blue-eyed cormorants also occurred in Antarctica and the pictures were taken in these two places. There in Antarctica they were not numerous, but amongst the penguin colony, it was possible to approach much closer to their nests, without disturbing them. In the vicinity of Ushuaia their flocks sometimes counted several hundred individuals. Among the colonies dolphin gulls’ or kelp gulls’ nests could be seen. Great skuas, as elsewhere, were uninvited guests in this colony. Feeding of young is probably very inconvenient for parents. Young in their greed hide the whole head in parent’s beak and throat to get to the food stored in the stomach. It looks like an aggressive and annoying behavior. The weight of a blue-eyed cormorant comes to 3.5 kilograms and a wingspan up to 110 centimeters.
