Birds > Hummingbirds > Antillean Mango Anthracothorax dominicus

info

In the Dominican Republic you can take pictures of three species of hummingbirds and the following text refers to all of them. I don’t recommend the Dominican Republic for those of you who want to photograph hummingbirds The beautiful pictures of hummingbirds on the Internet are taken at special feeders where the birds are used to the sight of people. This is the place to try to take a good photo of a flying hummingbird. I said “try” because everyone knows how fast they fly and how fast they can change direction. It is impossible to capture the hummingbirds squabbling in the air. I have not seen good places for photographing hummingbirds in the Dominican Republic such as those in Argentina or Costa Rica. Costa Rica  is inhabited by several dozen colourful species  of hummingbirds and there are places where with a little patience and luck you can take pictures that you want to come back to later. In the Dominican forests we saw hummingbirds weighing from 2.4 grams to 8 grams. Photos taken from 10 meters are only  documents confirming the observation.  Fortunately, there was one single place where hummingbirds often dropped in for a meal and since they were used to people it was possible to take interesting, dynamic photos from 2-4 meters. The scale of the difficulty however was large because of branches and the lack of light. Many hours of trying and repeating resulted in some interesting photos. Fortunately I brought a 300-2.8 lens from Poland which was perfect for this purpose and galleries were created.
