Birds > Podicipediformes > Little grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis

info

Very adequate name for our smallest Grebe. It weighs around 200 grams, not exceeding 300 grams, whereas the most popular Great Crested Grebe weighs around 1 kilogram, and can even reach 1.5 kilograms. Its wingspan is 40 centimeters, whereas it is twice as much with Great Crested Grebes. Therefore, it is a big difference. After closer acquaintance with this water bird you grow fond of it very quickly and admire its rusty neck and habits worthy of its larger cousins. It swims and dives in search for food. It appears quite frequently, but not enough to observe it in the parks or city reservoirs. It comes flying to us around March, and leaves in November.

These few photos of the Little Grebe added to the gallery make me feel happy, but what makes me contented is also the fact that I managed to record the voice of tiny Little Grebes. The mother was keeping a certain distance from me, suddenly she called her young and the photography session was over. It’s a pity that Little Grebes appeared in front of the lenses quite late, when it was getting cloudy and the light color was not as good as it had been just after the sunrise. Before I left the fish pond the sun appeared for a moment, and with the sun appeared Little Grebes. Without any camouflage, I managed to take a few photos. The effects are in the gallery.

So, we now have totally renewed the gallery as its previous content went to the archive. Jacek, I thank you for making available such a rare lookout point. An amazing place, where it is impossible not to take good pictures. Of course it was not comfortable to keep lying in the small hide and endure low temperature slightly above zero in the morning – but the effort was worth it. I managed to take so many photos that it was hard to choose the pictures for the gallery and eliminate others as not to make it overloaded. Finally I have pictures that show the charm of our smallest grebe.

Gallery improvement continues. As part of its variety, I added several photos to the gallery, which already had the status of very good and to which I have come back more than once.
