On my website, there are galleries that contain no descriptions or information about the photographed species. But the gallery dedicated to the Garden Warbler simply cannot be one of them. All my friends are probably smiling as they read this, because they know exactly why. The Garden Warbler became something of a photographic obsession for me – a species I really wanted to add to my portfolio. I’ve lost count of how many times I tried to take just a single photo to confirm a sighting. I heard it many times, yet the years went by and the long-awaited photograph still didn’t exist. And this, despite the fact that it’s a relatively common bird in Poland! Eventually, I started to joke that I’d sooner photograph ostriches in migration than manage to catch a Garden Warbler with my camera. That’s how elusive and difficult to photograph this bird is. But this time, I finally succeeded. All thanks to the kindness of Jasiek (huge thanks!), who tipped me off about a location where a Garden Warbler had its territory and where it was worth giving it another try. I had heard the bird in many places before, but this particular spot turned out to be unique – a heavily urbanized area, which may have helped the bird grow more tolerant of people. Its territory was a hilly patch of land covered in shrubs and trees – a narrow wedge of greenery, bordered on two sides by sidewalks and on the third by a railway line. The space was just a few dozen meters wide. The Garden Warbler had clearly become accustomed to close human presence and finally, after all those attempts – it appeared right in front of my lens! I didn’t take many photos, but it was enough to feel satisfied – and to finally create a gallery for the Garden Warbler. Although it’s not one of my favorite species – it doesn’t fascinate me the way the Wren, Bearded Parrotbill, or Goldcrest do, birds I return to with pleasure – the Garden Warbler’s place in my portfolio is still deeply meaningful. It may not be particularly beautiful or photogenic, but it makes up for that with its lovely song, elusive nature, and the challenge it presents to observers. I did it – finally! Once again, thank you, Jasiek – because it’s thanks to you that I was able to photograph my 415th species from the Polish fauna list (out of 474 recorded in the country as of June 7, 2025). And with its own soundtrack, too! The Garden Warbler gallery has been added to the news of my website– after so many years of waiting for this encounter, it simply couldn’t be any other way.
