Birds > Charadriiformes > Grey plover Pluvialis squatarola

info

There are places which are worth  visiting every year during the autumn flights of birds. This place is Rewa (a town on the Baltic See in Poland). It has never happened to me that I was unable to observe something interesting there and to photograph it of course. This time it started with quite an interesting observation of cormorants. We were on a headland (Jan, Jurek - regards)  half an hour before sunrise. In front of us, about 100-150 meters ahead, hundreds, maybe more than a thousand cormorants  organized a morning rally. An amazing view!. The headland,  over a dozen meters wide, suddenly became dark with a gigantic herd of cormorants on the distance of 100 meters. Until sunrise the birds were coming all time to suddenly, during a few second,  rise up into the air, and the headland revealed  preying red knots, common ringed plovers and a species I haven’t photographed so far - the Grey Plover. Unfortunately the grey plovers were not as numerous as the cormorants because there were only three specimens. On top of all they were quite timid. It was necessary to work with a 1.4 converter to take a few pictures enclosed in my gallery. The Grey Plover can be seen in Poland only when migrating. These birds have nests in tundra and spend  winter in Africa. The weight of the Grey Plover is up to 300 grams and wingspan is about 80 cm.
