It is the most distinctive bird in Poland. It is estimated that every fourth representative of this species is „ a Pole”, and in Poland there are a few thousands of them (about 50,000). The stork has perhaps positive associations for everyone, but one should remember that it is a capable predator. It eats everything that moves and stands in its way. From bigger insects to small birds, grass snakes, slowworms, frogs, etc. An interesting thing is that before their departure in August you can observe huge flocks of storks called “storks’ seym”. I’ve once had a chance to watch such a seym, but unfortunately didn’t have the right equipment with me to capture it. Stork’s weight can exceed 4 kg, and its wingspan reaches about 2 meters. Thus, it is smaller than the crane.

Despite that Storks in Poland are aplenty taking pictures of this bird flying in to its nest, and not from the ground requires some effort, permission from the building's owner and a comfortable spot to photograph to be exact. But I made it, this time while photographing the Common Kestrel. Storks do not fear people, they did not show any fear from dozen or so meters, and the pictures are attached. Kestrels sitting nearby needed any reason to fly away. There were as much as four nests on the roof on which I was photographing the storks. More so, it was a middle of April and you could already see the young. Storks also accepted other pair of storks which accomodated nearby, but you could see that there were borders, which crossed ended with one stork scarring away the other bird which got too close. I guess it was a result of caring for the youngling, because I have already heard a lot about stork's gluttony. They eat everything that stands in their way. So he would not scorn the young. I think I took couple of interesting shots which I added to the gallery.
Last minute news 05/2015
Unexpectedly, before my lookout point prepared for the lesser spotted eagle appeared two white storks, and after a while the third joined. I took several interesting shots that I added to the gallery. Ironically, I could not record so popular sound of chattering when they welcome each other. Nearby was a stork's nest, where they always could be heard upon arrival. So this sound recording is yet to come.

Here in Poland it is commonly known that our storks, so characteristic of our country and often associated with it, spend winter in Africa. I could not help adding some pictures of our storks in a typical African scenery. On this occasion I also added a stork with a bald ibis. This photo comes from South Africa.
