My attempts to capture Asian barbets in Thailand ended in a complete failure. I didn’t manage to take a single satisfactory picture of any of the 4 barbet species which I photographed. They would always appear on tops of tall trees, what is more, there was always sky in the background and even converters and framing did not help. The distance was so huge that I wasn’t able to take good quality photos. Asian barbets do not belong to large birds. The length of their body is about 20-30 cm. They live in Asia south of the Himalayas.

In the afternoon when I was in the rainforest I could not find anything but butterflies. A few birds in the treepots, but too far from me to take an interesting picture. After such an “explosion” of numerous species I had watched near Iguazu Falls in the morning, then I had the impression that it was a bird desert. Fortunately, a lineated woodpecker arrived for a moment. Unluckily I could see it sitting on top of a dried tree, with the sky in the background. But after a few hours of fruitless searching that made me feel like I was wasting time, I was glad of that.

The trip to Tanzania was successful in many aspects. I managed to take pictures of the remaining species which belong to the Big Five. Although it was not difficult to see lions, a lion standing during the day was a real sensation. Lions usually hunt at night and many times we could hear their roar when we were in our tent. During the day, conversely, they lay in the shadow of a tree and we could approach them in our car even at a distance of several meters. And so what if I didn’t manage to take a good picture.

I admit that when I was getting up at 5 am in August in Swinoujście to go to the seaside with the camera I was quite skeptical about what I could photograph. The holiday season in a place like that means people on the beach practically around the clock. But without trying I will have no pictures for sure. When coming to the beach I could confess my fears proved correct, even so early you could count a dozen people.

Svalbard, or more precisely Spitsbergen, as it was the island of the Svalbard archipelago where we stayed and swam around - it is the northernmost place where one can observe and, of course, photograph birds. Always after my photographic trips I try to start with writing, so that what exists in the most elusive memory I could express straightaway. Working on pictures or soundtracks is just a matter of time needed for processing. This time, for various reasons, an account had to wait but I hope that what is the most important I still remember.
