Birds > Passerine > Giant Nuthatch Sitta magna

info

Despite the fact that I did not manage to take good photos of the giant nuthatch in Thailand, a gallery of this bird had to be created on my website. For two reasons. The first one is my absolute fondness of these birds. I have managed to photograph 4 species of nuthatches so far and my eagerness to have the giant nuthatch in my gallery, the biggest nuthatch on the globe, was the second reason. It is really giant when compared with other nuthatches, as the length of its body reaches 20 cm, and its weight reaches 50 grams. Unfortunately it was difficult to follow it in the woods, but from time to time it drummed a tree making a sound similar to the sound of a feeding woodpecker. In Thailand I managed to photograph 3 nuthatch species and luckily among them there is the giant nuthatch and the velvet-fronted nuthatch, which is probably the most beautiful of all nuthatches which I have ever photographed. Giant nuthatches occur in China, Thailand and Burma. They live in subtropical coniferous forests. Sadly their population is shrinking due to felling of large conifers. It is estimated that the current population of them does not exceed 2500 specimens and it is continuously going down.
